John Giles took part in his first benchrest event at the 1971 National Championships held at Belmont Brisbane.

This began twenty years of total dedication to the sport as a competitor, the high point of which was his first 4 Gun National Championships win in 1975.

In the ensuing years up to 1983 he won a total of four 4 Gun National Championships and amassed points in the Australian Benchrest Hall of Fame at an undeniably unprecedented rate since its inception in 1978.

John passed away in 2022.
