5 Fly Hits Q&A with our Sponsor Aussie Benchrest

SSAA Brisbane Fly United Invitational Championships

5 Fly Hits Q&A with our Sponsor Aussie Benchrest

Fly Hit 1 Q: (Shane) Please introduce yourself and how long have you been into Shooting Sports?

Answer: (Wazza) Thank you Shane, My Name is Warwick Shepherd… everyone calls me Wazza. I have been involved in shooting, mainly hunting, Since I was 18. I started competition shooting in 1992 shooting a Caspian 38 super in IPSC for Dick Haines (Ashmore gun shop). Then in 1996,97 I shot competition compound bow in 3DAAA.
Then finally started bench rest shooting in 2015, maybe the subconscious was telling me I was no longer 18 and it was time to stop running around shooting and to relax at a bench. I am not sure, but I do really enjoy my shooting sports.

Fly Hit 2 Q: (Shane) State of Origin series is under way, are you a Qld or NSW Supporter?

Answer: (Wazza) Ok is there another team! Qld’er all the way

Fly Hit 3 Q: (Shane) If you could own any Centrefire caliber out there, what would you choose just because... you just Want one?

Answer: (Wazza) 6mm dasher would be my choice

Fly Hit 4 Q: (Shane) Now we know a little about you, the owner of Aussie Benchrest. In a short paragraph can you please tell us about the business Aussie Benchrest, which is helping sponsor the Fly United invitational Championships?

Answer: (Wazza) Shane I started my dream to build an Australian made rest in 2018. With very little funds, I spent a lot of time on fusion 360 trying different ideas. After the first rest was completed, we placed the rest on a rotary jig, where the joystick was rotated for 3 months none stop to try the different spherical bearings available, a lot failed! But we found the correct bearings in the end. Then from there with help from people like Vince Vaina, The Q-store, Dane Rasmussen (which has been great), we have built a great Australian product. Aussie Benchrest sources the front bags from BRT who are a fantastic business to deal with. We have f/class feet now as well, which can be threaded to suit.
Shane I am very passionate about my product and could go on for hours.

Fly Hit 5 Q: (Shane) How and where can potential customers get information on your products and purchase them?

Results and Photos

What a weekend it was… the Inaugural SSAA Brisbane Fly United Invitational Championships.

We were all bright-eyed and bushy tailed Saturday morning 7am ish… about 9 deg temp and with a little more breeze from the green side of the flags than anticipated. Sign-in opened and the rush was on… the ledger was signed, and the rifles were weighed, LG CF morning was upon us.

The briefing was under way with the short and the tall of it “Literally” (See the Photo) spelling out the dos and the don’ts. Kath Dundas giving a report on Dave’s accommodation sorting skills with the QRA (Queens Residents Accommodation) getting a tick of approval.

A minute or 2 past 8am, Vince called Detail 1 to the line for their Warmer Card. It was game on as Mark Lacey would say… with a somewhat relatively constant breeze, a little mirage but not bad.

You couldn’t have really asked for a better morning to go fishing!!!

But the brave left their boats in the sheds to come along and hurt their heads, no matter how they tried that little Fly just continued to hide. Robert Jackson wasn’t fazed, he popped right up at the top and said, “I have got it made.”

LG DONE, quick break for lunch and we were into the HG Class… now Mr and Mrs Kaizen Tactical, had a plan, teamwork was the name of the game. One would shoot and one would spot… next detail it was rinse and repeat but on the alternate seat. “Luck Favors the Prepared” they declared… and so it did. Mark Lacey wiped the floor with the 6GT little bore.

Now the 2 gun CF was declared. The day was done, some who had boats had wished they fished! But was it worth the risk to stay another day, to play for the ultimate pay day? An Aussie Benchrest Pro and a Kaizen Tactical V4 Autotrickler awaited the talented shooters who would master the tricky and flicky Rimfire Flags.

Sunday morning arrived, once again the sign-on opened and weigh in done. A quick briefing with time to present some of our Sponsors, Mark and Fiona Lacey from Kaizen Tactical / ARB Coppers Plain and Springwood. Phil Jones from RBLaminate. Vince Vaina from Vince Vaina Target Sports Management. Wazza Shepherd from Aussie Benchrest and Rob Van Gal from Pacific Palms Realty.

Around 8am Detail 1 was called to the line, with similar conditions to Saturday all were yet to decide Green or Red and would it eventually get in their head. The morning went quick, as the breeze really did decide to give the projectiles a flick. Some hit a Fly! Some looked to the sky and asked Why? Travis Vaina was the master of the mind, as he managed to ignore others mental decline. With a top score no one could deny… Travis was the one to hold his head high.

With the hard work done, it was time for the fun. With the short and the tall taking to the floor once more… a mic in hand… with no real plan. Once the prizes were done, this concluded the fun.

Until 2024, where we wish to see you all, for some more fly hunting fun!
