Guys. For my two bobs worth - I've also been chasing a Harrel for my new 2013. I have spoken to Dan Killough and he confirms that Homeland Security have threatened large fines etc for anyone exporting anything without a mountain of paperwork. I've also written directly to Ron Hoehn ( ron@hoehnsales.com ) and am awaiting a reply. Just out of interest, recent puchases that have been accepted by delares but later 'stopped' include a simple torque wrench, a scope alignment kit and a scope Lens filter kit - all of which as can be seen, can be usde by terrorists... As they say - only in America

Brett and all...

As mentioned yesterday - I called and wrote to Ron Hoehn in the U.S. seeking advice and he has confirmed that (like many other company's that I've tried to purchase from) - he "can't ship anything related to firearms out of the country" - his words. Clearly - they have to get the 'Permission to Export' paperwork done and we just have to wait - and I won't be asking anyone to try going 'around' US Customs law. We'll wait... If I hear anything - I'll let the forum know. Cheers.

Have you tried to source one locally?

I would try BRT, Procal, and Progress.

All are listed under sponsors.

State Department permit crap

What about a Lowey tuner (made in Australia)
http://www.benchrest.com.au/images/products/full-size/LoweyTuner.jpg
These are 'sized' to order though. Measure the end of your barrel (accurately)

or yes I do have some Shadetree (Butch Lambert) tuners left BUT they require threading to the barrel.

Also as for torque wrenches, look at the new Borka tools unit which we have just got agency for
http://www.borkatools.com/default.html and here is a Youtube video. Interesting device.

Also as for scope ring alignment and lapping tools what about the BRT sets (made in Australia....whoops sorry, MADE IN QUEENSLAND)

Tuners etc

Hi Stuart,

I guess the key is that having done your research - you really don't want to settle for a substitute but I do appreciate your kind advice - as always.

I already have a Lowey tuner (bought from you) for my 64MSR and it works a treat having allowed me to shoot 2 200's sofar in my short time back in the sport.. I've bought a new Anschutz BR50 and wanted the Hoehn to compliment it to try something different based on what I read. Pro-Cal still advertise the Hoehn but at double the U.S. price but have no stock so maybe I'll have to wait while Ron or Dan Killough get their paperwork sorted and I 'run in' the BR50.

As for the lapping gear and torque wrenches - you're right - I'm happy to continue to buy through you or via Bill but I'm just annoyed and frustrated at the bloody minded, petty pencil pushers that for reasons known only to themselves, decide to suddenly prevent any and all gun related items exiting the U.S.

Thanks again

Tunner

I should have tried my normal supplier first (Procal), but when ordering some other bits I asked Peter at Pro-Cal and he did not have any instock but expected to recieve a shipment of 5 I think he said in a week or two.
True to form it arrived at my door 5 days later, I should not have been surprised Peter is the best in the business for delivery time but I was impressed.
This is for a customer job, was more expansive then getting one exported but that is not an option at the moment so it was not more expensive in hind sight.

By the way, I have not fitted one before do you pull it apart to bore it out to the barrel size or leave it together and just do it all the way up and chuck it up.

Its easy

Pull it apart then you can just put the barrel in a 3 jaw and bore it out to the correct size.

Be careful, you dont want it too loose, just a press fit.

Thanks Rob

Are there any tricks to pulling it apart. Do you just unscrew it all the way, or do I need to undo that allen head screw at some point.

Brett

Yes there is

The allen screw holds a spring and a ball bearing into place. Undo it slowly so you dont lose the bits!

Tuner - the last word

Guys,

Just heard back from Ron Hoehn. He has stated that he is not prepared to do the paperwork necessary to export his components. So - a win for the pencil pushers and happy clapping tree huggers.

That said - he did indicate that Kelblys and Sinclair have attained export licensing so that's the way around it - he can sell to them - and they to us.

I give up !!

Yep, good old US of A State

Yep, good old US of A State Department. We have to get State Department export permits now for Kelbly scope rings.

An opportunity

These export difficulties must apply equally across the globe.
Is there an opportunity for Australian manufacturers to take advantage of this situation?

Jason’s tuner does work extremely well, BRT/Stuart provides many high quality benchrest aids,
Pro-cal, local gunsmiths, machinists etc. A top local rimfire action??
Perhaps the benchrest world is tired of finding it difficult to get the things they need.

“Export action” was the catch cry in the early to mid sixties, it may be appropriate now.

Tuner - again

Dennis, et al.

Appreciate the comments and in any 'normal' circumstance - a manufacturer would happily 'jump in' and grab a piece of the pie. Problem is that in reality - our market is far too small to justify tooling up for these types of projects - hence the vast array of bits being imported. Equally, with guys like Brett and the quality of his workmanship around - who knows..he just might 'give it a go'.

And yes, while I recognise that 'other' brands are around - and some are available here (I already have a Lowey) the Hoehn is what I want and I do not want to compromise for this rifle.

Peter (from pro-cal) has advised me that he has an order outstanding and I admit to being super cynical as to whether they'll ever arrive but hey - you never know - but I have ordered one from him.

I think that about covers this subject.
